Your Surgery

Preparing for surgery can feel overwhelming, particularly when facing treatment for a breast condition or breast cancer diagnosis. A/Prof Farid Meybodi and his team are committed to making the surgical journey as clear, coordinated, and supportive as possible - from your initial consultation through to recovery and follow-up care.

Every treatment plan is personalised, with careful attention to communication, surgical safety, comfort, and long-term wellbeing.

Planning Your Surgery

During your consultation, A/Prof Farid Meybodi will discuss:

  • Your diagnosis and recommended procedure
  • Surgical options and treatment goals
  • Reconstruction or oncoplastic considerations where appropriate
  • Expected recovery and follow-up care

Patients undergoing breast cancer treatment may also have their care reviewed within a multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated and evidence-based management.

Once surgery is planned, our team will assist with hospital bookings, pre-operative requirements, and surgical scheduling.

Preparing for Surgery

Before surgery, patients may require:

  • Pre-operative blood tests or investigations
  • Breast imaging review
  • Anaesthetic assessment
  • Medication review

You will receive detailed instructions regarding fasting, medications, and preparation for your procedure.

Certain medications and supplements may need to be stopped prior to surgery, particularly those that increase bleeding risk. It is important to inform the team about all prescription medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, and injectable weight-loss medications.

Patients are also encouraged to stop smoking prior to surgery where possible, as smoking can affect wound healing and recovery.

What to Bring to the Hospital

Patients are generally advised to bring:

  • Medicare and health insurance details
  • Comfortable loose-fitting clothing
  • Relevant imaging or pathology if requested
  • Current medications
  • Supportive post-surgical garments if advised

After Your Surgery

Recovery varies depending on the procedure performed, however some swelling, bruising, tightness, and fatigue are common during the early healing period.

Patients will receive detailed post-operative instructions regarding:

  • Wound care and dressings
  • Showering and activity restrictions
  • Pain management
  • Support garments
  • Follow-up appointments

Most dressings are waterproof, allowing gentle showering unless otherwise advised.

Activity & Recovery

Gentle movement and light walking are encouraged during recovery, however patients should avoid:

  • Heavy lifting
  • Strenuous upper body activity
  • High-impact exercise during early healing

Patients undergoing breast surgery or reconstruction may also receive guidance regarding shoulder mobility exercises and physiotherapy support where appropriate.

Recovery timelines vary depending on the type of surgery performed and individual healing.

When to Contact the Practice

Patients should contact the practice if they experience:

  • Increasing redness or swelling
  • Fever or chills
  • Worsening pain
  • Persistent wound discharge
  • Sudden breast swelling or asymmetry
  • Concerns regarding healing or dressings

Clear communication and early review are important parts of safe post-operative care.

Follow-Up Care

Follow-up appointments allow A/Prof Farid Meybodi to monitor healing, review pathology results where applicable, and guide ongoing recovery and treatment planning.

Some patients may also require:

  • Physiotherapy or lymphoedema support
  • Oncology or radiation therapy review
  • Further reconstructive planning
  • Long-term imaging follow-up

Our goal is to support patients throughout every stage of surgery and recovery with personalised, compassionate, and coordinated care focused on both clinical outcomes and long-term wellbeing.
