Diagnostic Workup

Diagnostic Workup

A thorough and accurate diagnostic workup is an essential part of modern breast care. Whether assessing a breast lump, abnormal imaging finding, nipple changes, breast pain, or a newly diagnosed breast cancer, careful evaluation helps guide diagnosis, treatment planning, and personalised patient care.

A/Prof Farid Meybodi works closely with experienced breast radiologists, pathologists, breast physicians, oncologists, and multidisciplinary breast cancer teams to ensure patients receive comprehensive and evidence-based assessment throughout every stage of their diagnostic journey.

Our approach focuses on timely assessment, clear communication, coordinated care, and personalised treatment planning tailored to each patient’s individual circumstances.

Clinical Assessment

The diagnostic process usually begins with a detailed consultation and clinical breast examination. During your appointment, A/Prof Farid Meybodi will review:

  • Your symptoms and medical history
  • Previous imaging or biopsy results
  • Family history of breast cancer
  • Hormonal and risk factors
  • Any breast changes or concerns

This clinical assessment helps guide further investigations and ensures that imaging and treatment recommendations are tailored appropriately.

Breast Imaging

Breast imaging plays a central role in the diagnosis and evaluation of breast conditions. Depending on your age, symptoms, breast density, and clinical findings, investigations may include:

  • Mammography
  • Breast ultrasound
  • Breast MRI
  • Tomosynthesis (3D mammography)

Imaging helps assess breast abnormalities, guide biopsies, evaluate the extent of disease, and assist with treatment planning.

A/Prof Farid Meybodi works closely with specialist breast imaging providers and interventional breast radiologists to ensure high-quality diagnostic assessment and coordinated patient care.

Interventional Breast Radiology

Modern breast care often involves specialised image-guided procedures performed by experienced breast radiologists. These minimally invasive techniques help accurately diagnose breast abnormalities while reducing the need for more invasive surgery.

Interventional breast radiology procedures may include:

  • Ultrasound-guided core biopsy
  • Stereotactic biopsy
  • Vacuum-assisted biopsy
  • MRI-guided biopsy
  • Cyst aspiration
  • Pre-operative localisation procedures

These procedures allow suspicious areas identified on imaging to be sampled accurately and safely, helping guide diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

Breast MRI

Breast MRI is sometimes recommended in selected patients to provide additional information beyond mammography and ultrasound. MRI may be useful for:

  • Assessing the extent of breast cancer
  • Evaluating dense breast tissue
  • Screening higher-risk patients
  • Assessing implant integrity
  • Investigating complex or inconclusive imaging findings

Not all patients require breast MRI, and recommendations are individualised based on imaging findings, cancer characteristics, and overall clinical assessment.

Breast Biopsy & Pathology

A biopsy involves taking a tissue sample from an area of concern within the breast or lymph nodes for microscopic examination by a pathologist. Biopsy procedures are commonly performed under image guidance to improve accuracy and minimise discomfort.

Pathology results provide important information regarding:

  • Whether findings are benign or malignant
  • Tumour type and grade
  • Hormone receptor status
  • HER2 status
  • Other features important for treatment planning

Understanding pathology results is a critical part of determining the most appropriate management and personalised treatment approach.

Multidisciplinary Planning

Modern breast cancer care involves close collaboration between specialists across multiple disciplines. Diagnostic findings are carefully reviewed alongside imaging, pathology, and clinical assessment to ensure accurate diagnosis and evidence-based treatment planning.

A/Prof Farid Meybodi works within experienced multidisciplinary breast cancer teams involving:

  • Breast radiologists
  • Pathologists
  • Medical oncologists
  • Radiation oncologists
  • Breast physicians
  • Breast care nurses
  • Reconstructive and allied health specialists

This collaborative approach helps ensure that every patient receives personalised and coordinated care tailored to their diagnosis, treatment goals, and long-term wellbeing.
