Male Breast Health

Male breast conditions are more common than many people realise and can affect men of all ages. Changes in the male chest or breast tissue may occur due to hormonal changes, ageing, medications, weight fluctuations, underlying medical conditions, or, more rarely, breast cancer.

A/Prof Farid Meybodi provides comprehensive assessment and management of male breast conditions, including gynaecomastia (enlarged male breast tissue), male breast reduction surgery, and evaluation of concerning breast symptoms or lumps. Every patient receives an individualised assessment focused on identifying underlying causes, excluding significant pathology, and developing the most appropriate treatment plan.

Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia is a common condition involving enlargement of male breast tissue. It may affect one or both sides of the chest and can occur during adolescence, adulthood, or later in life.

Symptoms may include:

  • enlargement of the chest or breast tissue
  • tenderness or discomfort
  • Asymmetry
  • fullness beneath the nipple
  • self-consciousness regarding chest appearance

Gynaecomastia can develop for a variety of reasons including:

  • hormonal imbalance
  • weight gain
  • certain medications
  • anabolic steroid use
  • liver or endocrine disorders
  • ageing-related hormonal changes

In some cases, no specific cause is identified.

A thorough consultation and examination help determine whether the enlargement is related to true glandular breast tissue, fatty tissue, or another underlying condition.

Assessment & Investigation

Careful assessment is important to identify potential contributing factors and exclude more serious conditions. Evaluation may include:

  • clinical examination
  • review of medications and medical history
  • hormonal or blood tests
  • breast imaging such as ultrasound or mammography where appropriate

A/Prof Farid Meybodi takes a personalised approach to assessment, ensuring patients receive appropriate investigation and clear guidance regarding available treatment options.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery

For patients with persistent gynaecomastia or significant chest enlargement, male breast reduction surgery may be recommended. The goal of surgery is to create a flatter, firmer, and more masculine chest contour while improving comfort and confidence.

Depending on the individual patient, surgery may involve:

  • removal of excess glandular tissue
  • liposuction
  • removal of excess skin
  • reshaping and contouring of the chest

Treatment recommendations are tailored according to chest anatomy, skin quality, severity of gynaecomastia, and patient goals.

Modern surgical techniques aim to minimise scarring while achieving natural and balanced cosmetic outcomes.

Male Breast Cancer & Red Flag Symptoms

Although uncommon, breast cancer can occur in men and should always be considered when evaluating certain breast symptoms.

Symptoms that should be assessed promptly include:

  • a firm or persistent breast lump
  • nipple discharge, particularly blood-stained discharge
  • nipple inversion or distortion
  • skin dimpling or ulceration
  • enlargement of lymph nodes in the armpit
  • persistent unilateral breast changes

Early assessment of concerning symptoms is important to allow accurate diagnosis and timely treatment where necessary.

A/Prof Farid Meybodi provides comprehensive evaluation of male breast lumps and suspicious breast symptoms using a multidisciplinary and evidence-based approach.
