Screening

Breast Screening

Breast screening plays an important role in the early detection of breast cancer and overall breast health. Many breast cancers are identified through screening before symptoms develop, allowing treatment to begin earlier and often with less invasive options.

A/Prof Farid Meybodi provides comprehensive breast assessment and works closely with experienced breast imaging specialists and multidisciplinary breast care teams to support patients with breast screening, breast imaging review, and personalised breast health assessment.

Why Breast Screening Matters

Early detection remains one of the most important factors in improving breast cancer outcomes. Screening aims to identify abnormalities at an early stage, often before a lump or other symptoms are noticeable.

Breast screening may help:

  • Detect breast cancer earlier
  • Identify benign breast conditions
  • Guide further imaging or biopsy where needed
  • Provide reassurance when imaging is normal
  • Support long-term breast health awareness

Women should also remain familiar with their normal breast appearance and seek assessment for any new breast changes, even if screening has previously been normal.

Breast Awareness

Breast awareness is an important part of ongoing breast health. Patients are encouraged to become familiar with the normal look and feel of their breasts and seek medical review if they notice:

  • A new breast lump or thickening
  • Skin dimpling or redness
  • Nipple inversion
  • Nipple discharge
  • Persistent breast pain
  • Swelling or changes in breast shape

Most breast changes are benign, however prompt assessment is important to ensure accurate diagnosis and reassurance.

Breast Screening & Imaging

Breast screening recommendations vary depending on age, personal risk factors, family history, breast density, and previous breast conditions.

Breast imaging may include:

  • Mammography
  • Tomosynthesis (3D mammography)
  • Breast ultrasound
  • Breast MRI in selected patients

A/Prof Farid Meybodi works closely with specialist breast radiologists and imaging providers to coordinate appropriate imaging and further investigation where required.

Mammography

Mammography remains one of the most important screening tools for the early detection of breast cancer. It can identify abnormalities that may not yet be felt on physical examination.

Some patients, particularly those with dense breast tissue or increased breast cancer risk, may benefit from additional imaging such as ultrasound or MRI alongside mammography.

Screening in Higher-Risk Patients

Patients with a strong family history of breast cancer, inherited genetic mutations, previous breast cancer, or other significant risk factors may require more personalised screening pathways.

Additional screening recommendations may include:

  • Earlier screening commencement
  • More frequent imaging
  • Breast MRI surveillance
  • Coordinated high-risk breast assessment

Screening recommendations are individualised based on each patient’s risk profile and clinical history.

Investigation of Abnormal Screening Results

Most abnormal screening findings are not breast cancer. However, additional assessment is sometimes required to clarify imaging findings.

Further investigation may include:

  • Targeted breast ultrasound
  • Additional mammographic views
  • Breast MRI
  • Image-guided biopsy procedures

A/Prof Farid Meybodi provides comprehensive breast assessment using a modern triple assessment approach involving clinical examination, imaging, and biopsy where appropriate.

Multidisciplinary Breast Care

Modern breast screening and diagnostic assessment involve close collaboration between breast surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, and multidisciplinary breast cancer teams.

Through coordinated care and timely communication, patients receive personalised assessment and evidence-based recommendations tailored to their individual needs and breast health concerns.

Supporting Long-Term Breast Health

Breast screening is one part of maintaining overall breast health and wellbeing. Associate Professor Farid Meybodi is committed to providing thoughtful, patient-centred breast care focused on:

  • Early detection
  • Prompt assessment of breast symptoms
  • Accurate diagnosis
  • Personalised risk assessment
  • Compassionate multidisciplinary care

We understand that breast investigations can sometimes feel overwhelming, and our goal is to provide clear communication, timely assessment, and supportive care throughout every stage of the screening and diagnostic process.
